From Signs of Spring to the Ice Age

As a gardener there is nothing more frustrating than waiting for spring. Spring brings new hopes for greener days and dirtier hands. That's just one reason why I was so excited yesterday when I saw those tiny green shoots pushing through the newly un-snow-covered ground. I had a fleeting thought that soon I would be able to get out into the garden to start the process of spring clean-up. I had visions of adding mulch, of straightening stones, even of weeding! Oh the spring dreams that I had only 24 hours ago...

And now I've been thrust back into the Ice Age!
My poor lilac bushes!

And the newly added trees are bent under the weight of the ice.

Even my one and only "large" tree has been battered and bruised.

I remember that once upon a time it was lush and full...Those were the days!

Why does Old Man Winter mess with my mind this way?

Wow, your large tree is gorgeous in the light of the last photo. I envy your tree! Sorry about the ice. I'm ice free at the moment but I don't doubt for a minute there won't be more round here.

Bummer! Let's hope your wonderful lilacs and baby and mature trees will live on to the the lushness of the last shot. Waiting for spring is nerve wracking, must...be...patient....ommmmm. ;->

We have trees in our neighborhood that are suffering too. So far our garden trees are in good shape. I feel for you with that gorgeous older tree .. and what is going to happen with our lilacs ! JEEZ !
This is never ending .. where the bleep is SPRING !!!!

Oh, I SO hear you....we're getting the same crud now, although we haven't had as much ice formation as in earlier storms. Maybe the wind that's screaming is keeping it down....

This is what we usually get in NC instead of Snow so I feel your pain. Those poor little trees look pitiful. I've seen this happen time after time and often the trees bounce back. I sure hope so in your case.

Cold and snow are two four letter words I don't want to hear anymore. I keep saying another week but here it is again - another week at least before winter breaks. ARRGH!

The deer have moved out of their winter hideouts so there is some hope spring is just around the corner. It was nice to see my garden nemesis even if they were checking out the lilacs.

Nicki~I was doing the dishes and staring out of my back window at sunset. It was a beautiful sunset after a rainy day. When I finally finished the dishes I went out on the front porch and saw my front tree. I ran thru the house like a crazy woman screaming, "Camera. Where'd I leave my CAMERA?" Hubby thought I was nuts taking that pic...now he wants to blow it up for artwork in our cabin!

Frances~I'm not sure that even meditation will calm my out of control spring lust but I'll try...

Joy~My baby trees have recovered (thank heavens) and I don't think that there will be any long term damage. My lilacs however... :( I've found some of the older trunks broke with the weight. Looks like I'll have to prune them pretty harshly. Sigh.

Jodi~Thank goodness we didn't get the wind until after the ice had a chance to thaw. Otherwise we would've been in a major spring disaster! For once I think we got lucky...

Anna~Ice on a regular basis? Okay, you can keep the snakes and the ice. I'll keep the snow. Deal?

WiseAcre~Remember that year (maybe 10-12 years ago) when there was snow on Mother's Day? Spring could be a long way off...But when it shows it's face...Wow! We're gonna be ready!
